‘Too few’ women using sun cream
The charity Macmillan Cancer Support is warning that not enough women are using sun cream.The charity said it found some people’s attitudes to being sunburnt “very concerning”.
The British Association of Dermatologists has also raised concerns that too many people are getting burnt.
The Macmillan poll of 1,500 women showed that 22% did not wear sun cream when on holiday in a hot country.
The charity said: “Of those who said they never wear sun tan lotion, when asked why, 24% say they don’t sun burn, 14% think sun tan lotion is too expensive and 12% believe it doesn’t work.”
Carol Goodman, a Macmillan nurse, said: “As
people are preparing to go abroad for their annual holiday, it is very
concerning that nearly a quarter of British women are putting themselves
at risk of skin cancer by not wearing any sun tan lotion abroad.
“Over two and a half thousand people die of skin cancer every year and so it is a real issue.”Figures from the British Association of Dermatologists showed 92% of people had been sunburnt at least once. One in three had been burnt more than ten times.
Stephen Jones, the president of the Association, said that everyone’s skin was different.
“Not everyone’s skin offers the same level of protection in the sun, which is why it’s really important to get to know your own risk level – for example, people with pale skin who burn easily or those with a close family history of skin cancer are at greater risk of sun damage and need to take extra steps to protect themselves.”

Jay is said to be “adamant” Rihanna should never forget what Chris – who is thought to be dating model Karrueche Tran – did to her when they were together, while the ’99 Problems’ rapper is concerned about what her fans will think about the pair’s secret rendezvous.
The source added: “He understands the need for forgiveness, but he is adamant that Rihanna shouldn’t forget what Chris did to her.
“Jay wonders what kind of message this is sending to Rihanna’s young female fans. Rihanna knows how Jay feels about Chris, but she doesn’t care, she is going to do what she wants.”
The 42-year-old rapper — whose wife Beyonce Knowles gave birth to their first child, daughter Blue Ivy, last month — is said to have warned Rihanna that meeting up with Chris again “isn’t going to end well”.
The insider added: “He is even more protective of the women in his life. Jay has told Rihanna he will never give his blessing for what she is doing with Chris. He has told her, this isn’t going to end well, it never does. In Jay’s opinion, Chris has rage issues that he doesn’t think have been dealt with.

Marc Anthony files for divorce from Jennifer Lopez
Anthony filed the petition under his real name Marco Muniz on Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court, citing irreconcilable differences. The couple announced in July that they were splitting up.
Anthony also filed for joint legal and physical custody of the couple's 4-year-old twins, Max and Emme.
American Idol judge Lopez, 42, and Anthony, 43, married in June 2004, months after Lopez's engagement to actor Ben Affleck ended, and days after Anthony's divorce from former Miss Puerto Rico Dayanara Torres was finalised.
The couple's split has been amicable so far, as Lopez and Anthony continue to work together on new television talent show Q'Viva! The Chosen. Lopez has also rebounded from the split, and is dating 25-year-old dancer Casper Smart.

Jolie to play Maleficent in Sleeping Beauty film
Jolie has signed on to portray the wicked godmother, it was announced by Disney Studios on April 9.
Similar to the role that Julia Roberts and Charlize Theron have played this year in two versions of the tale of Snow White, Mirror Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsman, Jolie will portray the title role, the villain Maleficent, who curses Princess Aurora.
The US release date for the live-action film will be March 14, 2014. The film, instead of following the usual story, explores the evil origins of Maleficent and what led her to curse Princess Aurora to sleep in the classic story of Sleeping Beauty.
In speaking of exploring the origins of the evil fairy from 1959's animated Sleeping Beauty, Jolie told Entertainment Weekly the project is "not anti-princess...I'm having a lot of fun. I've already got my horns fitted."
The Maleficent team includes Joe Roth (Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, Oz the Great and Powerful), screenwriter Linda Woolverton (Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King) and Oscar winning production designer Robert Stromberg (Avatar, Alice in Wonderland), who will make his directorial debut.
Anders Behring Breivik wants acquittal or death penalty
Anders Behring Breivik
has told his trial in Oslo he believes there can be only two "just"
outcomes to his trial - acquittal or the death penalty.
Breivik, who killed 77 people last July, said he considered a
lengthy jail sentence "a pathetic punishment". Norway does not have the
death penalty.He also said he had been "very surprised" to have survived the day of the attacks.
Prosecutors have been quizzing him on his links with militant nationalists.
On the third day of the trial they have been trying to disprove his claim of the existence of a far-right European network.
'Pathetic punishment' Under cross-examination, Breivik said: "There are only two just and fair outcomes of this trial - acquittal or capital punishment. I consider 21 years of prison as a pathetic punishment.
Asked if he wanted the court to give him the death penalty, he replied: "No, but I would have respected it. I would not recognise 21 years of prison, it's ridiculous."
Breivik killed 69 people at a Labour Party youth camp on Utoeya island, having first set off a bomb outside a government building in Oslo that killed eight people.
He has said he carried out the attacks to defend "ethnic Norwegians" from rising multiculturalism.
"I was very surprised that I survived that day," he told the court on Wednesday."I had no other plans for what to do. I considered the chance less than 5% that I would survive the bombing. But not only that, I survived Utoeya."
Breivik was also questioned about his religious beliefs by a lawyer for the victims.
"Well, I am a militant Christian; to prevent the de-Christianisation of Europe is very important," he said.
"But this does not mean we want to introduce a Christian theocracy. We are not Christian fundamentalists. I believe in God and I believe in a life after death."
Answering questions from a judge he described himself as an "anti-Nazi".
"A National Socialist would say, 'Norway for the Norwegians'. I am more liberal, I would accept 2% perhaps (of the population not being ethnically Norwegian)."
The court is seeking to establish whether Breivik is sane and can be jailed.
Earlier, Breivik said the far-right network, which he named as the Knights Templar, met in London to decide on its platform.
He said the group was "not an organisation in a conventional sense" but consisted of "independent cells".
Prosecutor Inga Bejer Engh told him the purpose of her questioning was to shed doubt on the network's existence.
In other parts of his testimony on Wednesday, Breivik told the court:
- the "big problem" for militant nationalists in Europe was that they had had very few role models since World War II
- he and other militant nationalists were "selling dreams" to inspire others
- he met a Serb nationalist in Liberia in 2001 who was one of the founding members of the Knights Templar
- he met his English "mentor", whose codename he gave as Richard the Lionheart, in London
- his own codename was Sigurd, after a 12th Century Norwegian king
He wrote that he underwent a "complete screening and background check" for the Knights Templar to ensure that he was of "the desired calibre".
He claimed the group was considering "several hundred" individuals throughout Europe for a training course.
Breivik has begun each court appearance with a right-wing clenched-fist salute.
His lawyers, addressing reporters after the day's hearing was adjourned, said they had asked him to stop making the gesture.Breivik's testimony, and that of his witnesses, is not being broadcast. His testimony is expected to last for a total of five days.
The leader of a support group for survivors of the 22 July attacks and victims' families says Breivik will be judged as a mass murderer, not as a man with a political agenda.
"The focus from our point of view is that he is not tried for his political views; he is on trial because he killed people, killed youngsters on Utoeya and my colleagues in the government quarters and that is the main focus for us," said Trond Blattmann.
The BBC's Steve Rosenberg, in Oslo, says a contradictory picture of Breivik is emerging - a man who hates Muslims, but admired Osama Bin Laden and al-Qaeda.
Our correspondent says Breivik sees himself as a great Crusader, when in fact he was a high school drop out, a failed businessman and an addict of computer war games.
Earlier, Breivik's lawyers warned that many Norwegians would find his comments upsetting.
If Breivik is judged sane and found guilty of murder, he faces a maximum of 21 years in jail, although that can be extended if he is deemed a threat to the public.
If he is judged to be insane, he will be committed to a psychiatric institution.
Clock change could leave teenagers more sleepy
Teenagers can suffer severe sleep deprivation when the clocks change, say researchers at the University of Surrey. During this period their concentration may be lower and mood affected.
Scientists also found that even before the change, teenagers were getting less than the recommended hours of sleep.
The activity of some sixth-form students from Claremont Fan Court School in Surrey was studied using wristwatches.
These were worn constantly over a 10-day period before and after the clocks moved forward on 25 March.
The watches reliably indicated when the teenagers were awake and asleep.
The researchers found that in the days following the clock change, the teenagers had less than six hours of sleep a night. Adults generally have eight.
Delayed sleep hormones
Joanne Bower, a sleep researcher at the
University of Surrey said: "During adolescence, teenagers experience a
shift in their circadian rhythm [body clock] - these make sure the same
things happen at the same time every day. One of these things is the
production of the sleep-promoting hormone, melatonin.
"For an adult, you would expect that to be early evening, but in teenagers it happens much later. "Even if you put your teenager to bed at 10 at night, they may not secrete melatonin until midnight, and so they're staring at the ceiling, and aren't sleepy.
"This means teenagers are awake later in the evening and find it difficult to rise early in the morning.
"Add this to the clock change, in which we lose an hour of sleep, and teenagers may suffer more than most."
The need for more sleep is something teenagers are familiar with. Noelle Delaney, a mother of a student involved in the study, said: "Some days it can be very difficult. I have been known to go in and pull her by her feet out of bed."
Consistent sleep deprivation can affect your health.
Mrs Bower said: "With anyone who doesn't get enough sleep it can be quite concerning. Over the long term you can find problems with your performance, concentration, and mood. We're lucky we are quite resilient. I think people generally do have an amazing ability to bounce back."
As this study was small, nine students in total, Mrs Bower says further research is needed.
"It would be good to have a bigger study looking at more teenagers. In this study we tested student performance the day before and after the clock change. It would be good to look at this during the days running up to and after the clock change and at different times of day."

Brittany Killgore Disappearance: Clues Found in Suspect's Suicide Note Led Police to Body
Investigators have found a body that may be that of missing California woman Brittany Killgore after they followed clues in the suicide note of a woman arrested in connection with the 22-year-old's murder.
The body, which has not been formally identified, was found late Tuesday
near Lake Skinner in Riverside County, Calif., about 20 miles from Killgore's home, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.
Jessica Lynn Lopez, 27, was arrested at a Ramada Inn in San Diego
Tuesday morning. The woman was found in the hotel with multiple
self-inflicted cuts and an apparent suicide note, which allegedly
explained what happened to Killgore, and where her body was.
An officer described the scene at the hotel over a police scanner:
"Lacerations at the Ramada Limited … The female is conscious and
breathing, medics are en route."
After her arrest Lopez was treated for an undisclosed medical condition
at a local hospital, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department said.
Authorities expected to charge her with murder after her release.
Investigators have yet to disclose Lopez's relationship to Killgore, KGTV and other local media reported.
The developments came after Killgore's estranged husband said he would
return home from Afghanistan, where he is an active-duty Marine, to help
in the search for his wife.

House speaker endorses Mitt Romney for president
The Ohio Republican told reporters Tuesday that Romney's proposals will offer a strong contrast with what Boehner says are President Barack Obama's failed efforts to revive the economy. Boehner said he will do all he can to help Romney win in November.
Romney no longer has serious challengers for the nomination and has been winning endorsements from many in the GOP establishment.
Boehner said he had withheld an endorsement until now because as chairman of the Republican National Convention in late August in Tampa, Fla., he wanted to make sure that all the GOP presidential contenders had a fair chance to win.
